Call me a lazy blogger...

The truth is I am a bit more busy these days with my professional life at work. The forthcoming audit at the company I work for is a pretty time consuming issue and therefore not even that I do not have enough time to finally finish and publish the artickles I work on, I even had to postpone the start of my private summer to a bit later term. :)

Surely, that does not mean I do not walk the streets of my city with eyes open and I do not listen to sounds that surrounds us and that I do not pick up the interesting stuff from the pavements anymore.. Therefore, I collected a few small picks I have collected within last week and offer them to you for a lazy summer Sunday...

Make you a nice comfortable place in the garden next to the pool, wet your lips with a cold tasty wine, relax and have a look on a few recommendations of what to LISTEN to, what to SEE and what to READ.

Enjoy, J.

What to LISTEN
a collection of tracks, sounds and mixes I liked recently

A pilot single from forthcoming album of Bjork is scheduled to be released on 30th June and Bjork is offering to her fans a small teasers, so that they have some clue what to expect. Check the video bellow to see how inovative in sound enginnering Bjork still is. They  gutted Bjork's old celeste and replaced the notes with custom made bronze notes and made it midi-compatible so it could be played remotely by an ipap... amazing.
Even sooner than Bjork, on 27th June a debut album of a french musician Quentin LaRoux, I don't want to be an Emporer is going to be released on Bellring label under the name of Quentin's alter ego Hugo Kant. If you already read my review of this amazing album and had a chance to listen to some of the tracks of Hugo Kant, you already know that Quentin is more than a gifted producer. Listen to his last mix called "Daylight" on Mixcloud and you will learn, Quentin is an excellent DJ as well. The Daylight mix is a perfect jazzy soundtrack for lazy trippy summer afternoon. Enjoy! (And do not forget to read the review of Hugo Kant's album if you missed it here.)

Album:  I don't want to be an emperor
Artist: Hugo Kant
Release Date: June 27th, 2011

It is just one month ago that the very first EP of Mr Quentin Le Roux staring his solo project under the name 'Hugo Kant' was released. Three tracks EP 'Searching London EP' was well received by the listeners and up to day Hugo Kant is approaching 20000 listens and 1500 downloads on Soundcloud. Pretty good start for the beginner, one would say. Honestly, the fact is Mr Le Roux is no beginner in music scene at all... Who's Hugo Kant then...?

Quentin Le Roux (Hugo Kant) was born on June 15th, 1976 in Marseille, France. At the age of 5 he started to study piano, guitar and music theory at the national music school and 13 years later he created his first music band 'Güs Weg Watergang' together with Simon Fayolle (aka Braka), Sébastien Smither, Olivier Dumaine and Richard Rozembaum.

This psychedelic jazz-rock band was already introducing Quentin as a gifted multi instrumentalist playing keyboards, flute, clarinet and sampler. Since 2002 when he left 'Güs Weg Watergang' he played in many different bands. Currently he's a part of  Samenakoa, Picture Shop and electro-jazz band Nuestra Cosa and playing even more instruments including drums, flute, clarinet, flugelhorn and bass guitar.

And, of course, he's also staring his solo project 'Hugo Kant' with debut LP 'I don't want to be an emperor' that is due to be released on Bellring label on June 27th, 2011. I was lucky to get a copy of this album from Quentin and listen to this very fresh stuff already. Curious about what to expect...? Read further... ;)

Hugo Kant (Quentin Le Roux)

According to Hugo Kant's official web page and official profiles on social networks, you should be prepared for a big portion of downtempo, nu-jazz, acoustic music and trip-hop. Frankly spoken, do not believe that.

The portion is even bigger than it could seem and cooked out of much more ingredients than mentioned above. Hip-hop, breakbeat, nu-jazz, acid jazz, downtempo as well as uptempo, trip-hop, psychedelic rock influences, electro, heavy sampling, touch of symphonics, and lots of acoustic music ... All these genres Hugo Kant mixes together with an ease like if it was the most natural thing. 13 tracks of the debut album could easily fit into The Herbalizer's or Dj Shadow's sets as well as into jazz or rock festivals, side by side with music of Jaga Jazzist, The Cinematic Orchestra or polish Skalpel .

The first listen to 'I don't want to be an emperor' recalled few years old memories in me. Can you also remember the amazing debut LP of Xploding Plastix 'Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents' LP? Than probably you will face this dejavu the same as I did. Not that there is nothing new on Hugo Kant's release, but the style and ease of browsing various genres and tempos are very similiar.

Anyway, there's much differences there still and that's only good. Where Xploding Plastix' debut were going wild and rough, Hugo Kant is keeping a typical french elegance and groovy flow. The excellent sounds of flute presented in the album are also definitely not letting you hesitate, that this music has been born in France and will make you ask yourself "Fuck, how could I forget about Ludovic Navarre already?".

Le Roux' lots of experiences from other bands (as an instrumentalist as well as the composer) and his love for technology and solid knowledge of studio work is relflected in the precise production of all tracks. Each one of them has it's own particular mood and orchestration but the album is remaining consistent and keeps listener's attention from the begining till the end providing him with colourful, dope picture of these days' jazz and electronic music.

With a bit of luck, this album should become really big one day... Do not miss that.

Enjoy the free samples to listen, J.

"The first European show of my EU tour this June was in Graz Austria for the Springfestival. I played alongside Dorian Concept, Martyn and Samiyam on Thursday and ended up staying an extra day on Friday.

That extra night the good people over at FM4 asked me to come in and do a short interview and dj set. It seemed like most of the other djs coming into the studio were playing more danc-y type sets. So, given the gentle mist of rain outside, the proximity to rolling hills and a massive river, I figured I would go a more gentle route. (I admit this mix is more of something my alter ego “Welder” would put out, but the world is a weird place, you never know what can happen.) Here is the simple gentle set. Enjoy." Eskmo @ www.eskmo.com

Eskmo could not start his last mini-mix with a better choice than Clark's 'Absence'. The opener is immediately setting the listener to a calm, relaxed setting of little rainy hot and lazy summer evening that you won't be willing to leave for hours and after the last track you will become to pray for some more... lovely. Enjoy listening or download from Soundcloud.com. J.

Btw., go to Eskmo's blog if you wanna see few pics from the event in Graz ;)
Track list:
1) Clark: “Absence”
2) Yuichiro Fujimoto: “Open Window (For Piano)”
3) Aphex Twin: “Tha”
4) Bibio: “St. Christopher”
5) DJG: “BC3″
6) Panda Bear: “Drone”

Artist:       Unit-E
Album:        Beats, Love & Unit-E
Release date: May 24th, 2011
Label:        Trust in Dust
Available for free download here

New beats coming out each day...

Back in 2009 Unit-E put together a collection of 9 tracks that finally have been discovered and released two years later on May 24th, 2011 on Trust In Dust label.

Luckily Beats, Love & Unit-E did not loose anything while waiting two years for the official release and the journeying beats & electronica that the album is filled with is remaining topical. Nice chilly hip-hop beats accompanied by the elements of soul ('Believe') and reminiscents of late 90's Vienna downtempo movement ('The Rhythm') and occasional descent vocal samples would be a perfect headphones soundtrack for summer evening walks on the river Danube bank even in 1999 as well as these days.

Well, not much experiments and not much new found here, but if you look for relaxed beats produced with uncompromising skills for the moments when you need to cool down, Beats, Love & Unit-E is definitely worth to try.

Artist:       Bandshell
EP:           Bandshell
Release date: May 30th, 2011
Label:        teaandcakerecords

Teaandcakerecords is a small independent label based in Hereford & Blackburn U.K. EP "Bandshell" by Bandshell that they released today is the third EP released on the label, following releases by Brotto, Grassland EP and Brotto Remixes.

5 tracks EP Badnshell's opener "Peel It (Hour String)" won't let you in any hesitation that this guy definitely "wants to make his own fucking music" and that he means it pretty serious. Agressive broken beats surrounded by disturbing sounds are fluently transforming to the amazing beats making lesson in second track "Midas".
Starting with "Memories Of Melting Ice", Bandshell is taking the listener to dark, deep space full of massive beats in somehow slower tempo in comparison to the first half of the EP. In the days when big dubstep labels are investigating the possibilities of mixing beats with even more soul vocals, r'n'b influences and even pop melodies, Bandshell EP is taking the oposite direction to the roots of the broken beats and underground electronic music bringing the term "leftfield electronica" to the game. More than worth to listen!
